If you earn more than R67 111 per year for the tax year beginning March 2013 and ending February 2014 (the 2014 tax year) then you will be liable for tax. Your employer should then pay this for you automatically by subtracting it from your salary.
UIF is a contribution to the Unemployment Fund which is a fund set up in the event that you are retrenched or cannot work for some reason. If that happens you will be able to claim some portion of your previous salary each month for a few months until you find another job.
The contributions made to UIF are 1% of the Gross Salary (total salary) regardless of whether you are liable to pay income tax or not.
