They should have provided the year in which they were going to be auditing, have they phoned you or sent you a letter?

Sars is busy with 2014 audit.
I have submitted all documents in November.
No further documents have been requested.
What is an assurance audit?

Please read our blog post on why you may have a delayed refund from SARS

Unfortunately SARS' time frames are not exact and in many instances take a considerable amount of time. You can call 0800 00 7277 and ask them to escalate the case once the 3 month period is up.

What is an assurance audit?
Is it the same as a regular audit?

It is the next stage of their verification process, the first stage is just verifying that the details submitted against the documents used. An assurance audit is ensuring that what was submitted is "makes sense" for your personal tax affairs.

Does SARS always ask for extra supporting
documents with an assurance audit?

In some instances yes, it would depend on their requirements, they have the legal power to do so.
