Lump sum tax on backpay?

Hi Tim

I am employed by the Department of Education. Last year (2012) the DOE did not pay my salary for 6 months (April - September), I then received the 6 months salaries in a lump sum in April 2013. I was therefore heavily taxed on the lump sum. When can I claim back that tax, with this year's tax return or next year?

You would have accrued the income in the 2013 tax year, despite when you were paid, so the DOE should include the amounts in your 2013 IRP5 so you would be able to claim the tax back in the current tax filing season.
