I would like to find out whether I can claim antenatal multivitamins and non-script items as part of medical expenses not covered by medical aid? I have been buying these since the beginning of the year and I was just wondering if since I use them for medical purposes would I be able to claim them. Kindly assist as I am very much confused. I heard somewhere that one is able to claim medical expenses from SARS, but I am not sure which expenses can be claimed. I tried looking for the list of medical expenses which I can claim, but I could not find it.

Unfortunately, you may not claim these items as it is not included in the allowable medical expense list that is mentioned in the income tax act. You can however claim for any blood tests, gynaecologist visits and other specialists if your medical aid did not cover it already or if they only covered part of the bills. Examples of qualifying medical expenses are any amounts that were paid by you, as the taxpayer, during the year of assessment:
  • For professional services rendered and medicines supplied by a registered medical practitioner, dentist, optometrist, homeopath, naturopath, osteopath, herbalist, physiotherapist, chiropractor or orthopaedist to you or any of your dependant(s)
  • To a nursing home or hospital, or any duly registered or enrolled nurse, midwife or nursing assistant (or to any nursing agency in respect of the services of such a nurse, midwife or nursing assistant) in respect of the illness or confinement of the person or any dependant of the person
  • For medicines prescribed by a registered medical practitioner and acquired from a pharmacist
  • Medical expenses incurred and paid outside South Africa
Please read our blog on Medical expenses for more information. You will also need to supply supporting documents for any additional medical expenses so please keep all proof of payments.
