Carmen said: 31 July 2025 at 8:20 How can I claim medical expenses for my mom who is a dependent but not on a medical aid? she is also disabled. She has a few disabilities that I have incurred Medical expenses for and I'm not sure how / where to enter this information on my Tax Return. This query relates to question 18136 "Do any of these expenses relate to a physical impairment or disability as approved by SARS?" in the Medical section. |

TaxTim Alicia said: 2 August 2025 at 9:52 Thank you for the detailed information. Since she is dependent on you, you may claim the medical expenses that you have paid for. Please note, if SARS mark your tax return for verification, you will need to provide the invoices and proof of payments. Unfortunately, you will not be able to declare the disability because you are only able to declare disability for yourself, your spouse or your child. Thus, you will need to declare these additional medical expenses, where we ask for details for Qualifying Medical Expenses that you paid out of pocket. According to the log, you're currently at the question where we ask for the amount to be entered, which is followed by the following question: "Did you have any Qualifying Medical Expenses such as medical consultations, prescribed medication, tests or operations paid by you personally? This will NOT appear on a medical aid certificate. This is for you or a dependent." Thus, you are currently in the correct place to declare these additional medical expenses. |
