I am a nurse and are required to wear a prescribed uniform and pay an annual fee for a practicing license. I do not get an allowance for either and have to pay for my own uniform and annual practicing license. Can I deduct these expenses from my taxable income?
You would not be able to deduct the license fee or uniform expenses unfortunately, you should ask the employer to provide you with a uniform allowance. In this way you will be taxed at your marginal tax rate, but won't have to pay for the uniform yourself which is a saving of at least 60%.
