Freelance Consultant - Income Tax Registration?

My wife has recently obtained her South African work permit (We are Indian Nationals) and will start work with a company in Johannesburg. They have asked her to register with SARS and provide a Tax Reference Number for her to be paid. I am a bit confused about how to go about registering.
