Tax on lump Sum pension Withdrawal

  Written by Marc

I worked at a company and my portion of pension contribution was taxed as it was part of my basic salary(taxable income). I resigned from my company and received a lump sum payout where there entire R264k was taxed at 18%(excluding the first R22500). Will I get this tax back when I submit my tax return this year as I feel I have paid tax twice once on my contribution and again on my lump sum payout.

I have a medical claim of R4500 which was not covered by my medical aid, can I claim this as a tax d

  Written by Marc

Any cash payment for medical expences = e.g. a single claim of R4500 and another of R2400. Can these costs be deducted from my tax return?

I was late in submitting my returns and a penalty notice was issued.

I was late in submitting my returns and a penalty notice was issued. I then (very quickly) finalised my returns which showed that SARS would owe me a refund. Does SARS deduct the penalty from my refund or do I have to pay the penalty first?

SARS requested additional documentation but didn't tell me

  Written by Marc

I am a provisional taxpayer... I work freelance and my income fluctuates. I've been doing my own tax through efiling for several years now, and have never had a problem. So this year, I send off my return on January 29 (yes, I know, leaving it till the last minute... every year I
promise I won't do that!!), and my assessment comes back, I'm owed R120.56. The amount is so small because I actually already did all the calculations in order to make my third provisional payment by the September deadline, so as not to incur any interest....

Bad boss not giving a raise

  Written by Marc

So I figured out that my husband was registered for UIF and tax, but that he never filed an IRP5 to claim back.

His boss hasn't given him a raise in 3 years. I complained and after a lot of fighting and him wanting my husband gone...I think he was making an example out of him, he gave him a raise of...R200!!! It was supposed to go up with the new financial year since 2010, but nothing!

Is what his boss doing legal? He says he can't afford to pay more, but he just bought a h...

I receive a salary from Taiwan, but pay tax there. What do I do?

  Written by Marc

I have recently returned from overseas and I'm planning to stay in South Africa. I'm about to start teaching online for a Taiwanese company and will be taxed 18% in Taiwan if I make more than $893 with them (which I plan to do). I just want to know if I have to pay tax here in SA on that income. It seems a bit harsh to pay 18% and then another x% here at home. Is this going to be unavoidable? The amount in my bank account every month should be between R7 000 and R10 000. If I have to pay full taxes on that, I was thinking of keeping back about 25%, but I first want to find out whether there are any lenience I can get since I'm already taxed in Taiwan....
