How do I convert from a provisional taxpayer to a regular taxpayer?

  Written by Marc

I have been paying tax as a Provisional Taxpayer to 2004 tax year. I was then permanently overseas and no longer liable for tax in SA. I returned in April 2012 and wish to pay tax as a regular taxpayer. Do I need to re-register or can I give my employer my provisional tax reference no.?

Sole Proprietor, Importing and Tax?

  Written by Marc

Hi Tim

Hope you can help me as I'm having a hard time finding the correct information.
I would like to start importing small quantities of goods, for resale, into South Africa as a Sole Proprietor. Now as far as I can tell I will need to complete the following forms at SARS to get an Importers Code: DA185 and DA 185.4A1.

Now the thing is I don't have a tax number etc because I've just finished my studies and I'm just starting out as a Sole Trader, and from the looks of it the DA185 form requires that information....

We are elderly people - not familiar with new things - can you help?

  Written by Marc

I am too old to learn new things - I had a bookeeper lady - she has become too expensive. She does not show us what to do, just did it for us. We need to get help in a simple old fashioned manner = that is what we are looking for. I am a provisional taxpayer - a little closer to 70 years old - so don't hit me with hi tech answers. I do not understand the tax jargon.

CC company when do I submit taxes? Not registered for VAT, only income tax.

How to manage your tax affairs running a business in your own name as a sole-proprietor

  Written by Marc

South Africa is brimming with entrepreneurs and small business owners who keep the economy running. These people may or may not be earning a regular salary too, but all of them operate a non-registered business in their own name - a so-called sole-proprietorship. In this blog post we will discuss how such a business pays tax, how it is taxed, and how to separate personal and business affairs to make tax deductions correctly.

Do I only pay tax for the months I am over the tax bracket?

  Written by Marc

I am just starting out a part time photography business from home. My income isn't a set amount each month. Do I only pay tax the months I am over the tax bracket? And do I pay tax on my total income - or only the amount after I pay everything - such as medical aid, insurance, business costs etc.
Also, because this is my only source of income - do I only pay income tax or?

Do additional taxes from late submission or under estimate get included in the irp6 form?

  Written by Marc

In filling in the irp6 form for provisional tax must the additional taxes incurred from late submission or under estimate for the second provisional tax payment be included in the form and if so where? Or does SARS tell you the additional taxes incurred when they send you your assessment for the year?

Would this apply as provisional tax ? Started freelancing, not paying provisional tax. Can TaxTim help?

  Written by Marc

I have being earning some money on the side as a freelancer during this last tax year and I went fulltime freelancing in a personal capacity at the end of 2011.

Will TaxTim be able to guide me with the expenses I can claim as part of operating as a freelancer? SARS is very strict on when certain expenses can be claimed. They seem to only allow expenses when salary is earned on a commission basis.

I'm retired at 65 years and older - what income tax benefits do I qualify for in retirement?

  Written by Marc

It would seem that SARS often prioritises younger taxpayers who are still working and receive a constant flow of income. However for many older South African taxpayers over the age of 65 who have retired or are still working, there are actually quite a few benefits to enjoy.

Firstly at 65 the tax threshold above which you would even begin paying tax is higher, at R99 056 per year (in 2012 it was R93 150). What's more, those taxpayers who are older than 75 years of age get an even bigger break at R110 889 per year (in 2012 it was R104 261)...

South African budget 2012/2013 - "Tax by stealth"

  Written by Marc

Eagerly anticipating the budget this year and forever the optimist, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan started off well: R9.5bn of individual tax savings and revenue collection up by R10bn from the latest estimates. However, for the individual taxpayer, things went slightly downhill from there... Let’s unpack this a bit.

Not all Doom and Gloom

Ok, ok so maybe I have been too harsh as only certain individuals (the richer ones) will actually be subject to greater tax, the lower end income earners will benefit quite a bit from the new tax changes...

New tax credit to replace medical aid deductions in post 2012 Tax Year

  Written by Marc

The 2012 tax year has almost come and gone, and being annual budget time, anxious taxpayers are unsure what to expect. Is there any room to be taxed further? All will be revealed on Wednesday the 22nd, but in the meantime let's focus on the new medical aid tax regime.

Gone are the days of paying your spouse's medical aid and claiming the deduction just because you are in a higher tax bracket. From the 2013 tax year onwards that deduction is no longer allowed. Instead it will be replaced with a tax credit per dependent. "What is the difference?" I hear the average taxpayer ask, and "How does it affect me?" ...

What is Provisional Tax?

  Written by Marc

So as we are getting closer to Provisional Tax Season the question on taxpayer’s minds is, do I qualify as a provisional taxpayer? The Income Tax Act sets out specifics as to who qualifies and who doesn’t.

If you are a salaried employee then your employer will deduct a monthly amount and pay it over to SARS on your behalf. You will only have to file one tax return at the end of tax season.

Otherwise you may qualify as a provisional taxpayer and will have to submit a return twice a year...
