I submitted my IRP5 at a SARS branch in Joburg and I received an SMS saying
Tax return assessment result: R-12000. Acc bal:R-12000. Selected for audit: Yes.
What does it mean?

This means that although you are due a refund of R12 000, SARS wants you to submit supporting documentation showing how you got to all the figures you entered. Don't be alarmed though, this is often a random selection. You can just take all your documents and drop them off at a SARS office and in a few weeks you should be paid out your refund.

Can you tell me which supporting documents are needed and where can I get them?

You would need the following if they are relevant:

IRP5 from your employer;
Medical Aid Tax Certificate;
Proof of all medical expenditure not covered by your medical aid;
Retirement Annuity Fund/Pension Fund/Income Protection fund contribution certificates;
IT3b/IT3c interest, dividend and sale of shares certificates from the banks and/or investment houses;
Donations certificates

I only have IRP5 from my employer which I presented to SARS and other documents are irrelevant, so what should I do now. Can I go back to SARS with the IRP5 and check my status?

If you took the IRP5 to SARS and that was the only relevant document that will be alright. Did you submit it to them? If so then it is fine, they will let you know when the audit has been finalised.

How long does it usually takes to receive tax refund after submitting required documents?

SARS can take anywhere between a few days and nine months unfortunately, but the standard time is 21 days! However my advice is be patient for now and look out for that SMS telling you the refund has been paid!
