I submitted a return for the first time myself in 2012. It was previously done by a colleague who was rather knowledgable. I work on a contract basis(Service Level Agreement) for a company, I only do contract work for them and no other company. I submitted my tax return for the 2012/13 financial year. I was requested to submit supporting documents, which I did. I was informed that I owe a sum of +-R16200 to SARS. It transpired that when I declared my medical expenses I included "cents" on my return. As a result of this I was penalised a sum of +-R162000 which I feel is unfair and unreasonable. How do I correct this?

My mom is older than 65, she gets a pension of about R5500 monthly. She belongs to a medical aid that subtracts roughly 1850 a month. She is not registered for tax (I registered her on efiling, but SARS then removed her after we went to them. They said she dont need to be registered.). Seeing that she earns around R66 000 per year and the medical aid contributions are ± R22 000 yearly, and she has some out of pocket medical expenses as well, can she at all claim anything for the medical?

I want to know, people say that SARS don't allow medical claims if its not on a prescription as from 2012 tax year. Is this true or can i still claim back my medical expenses that I bought over the counter. Other words my self medication (eg. panado's, rinex etc) that was not on a prescription from the doctor?

I joined a medical aid during the tax year, which cost me R 2000 per month. I know that the medical aid tax benefit allowed is R 230 per month. Will I be allowed to claim 12 x R 230 = R 2760 for the year, or may I only claim (number of months that medical aid was paid) x R 230?
