Occasionally I rent out the spare bedroom in my primary residence. I'm not running a guesthouse - it's just a way of making a tiny bit of extra income and meeting some interesting people. I don't often have people staying - maybe for a total of 30 days out of the year. Do I need to declare this as "rental income"? If so,
1. What expenses can I claim against this income?
2. Where do I put it on my return? I'm already using the section "Local business, trade and professional income" for ...

I am living in South Africa ( dual nationality UK/SA) but not working. My only source of income is UK interest on savings and rental income from our house in UK. I pay tax in UK but from what I've read it appears I should be tax registered here. Is this the case?
If it is, how do I prove my income as the UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April . Would a copy of my UK tax return be sufficient proof of income? Would I need to worry about the date overlap ?
My husband is no...

Hi Tim
I made a mistake on my tax return and included my employer contribution plus my own contribution to the company pension as well as my RA contribution under the RA section of the ITR12 as I was confused by the note that came up on screen saying the amount should also include the pension amounts appearing on the IRP5. I was uncertain but erred by putting down the full pension and RA contribution amounts.
However, I think this flagged me for an audit (never happened bef...

I own a website that I started as a Hobby (showcasing information about various sports teams and tournaments). The novelty has since worn off and I now want to sell the website. I have never earned or attempted to earn revenue from the website. Would I have to pay tax on the sale price? If so, what type of tax would I have to pay? (I am currently below the age of 65 and unemployed).
The website was given to me as a gift quite a number of years ago. I have since purchased domain names ...

My mom is 73 years old and she has had some penalties from previous years that she has made arrangements to pay to SARS, last year she was advised buy an official at a SARS branch to apply for tax pardon as she can no longer afford the monthly payments to SARS. There has been no response.
Secondly, I have had a tax consultant who is helping my mom with eFiling for 2013 and he informed me that he could not proceed with the filling as he is asked for supporting documents. What does this...

How do I know whether I need to submit a tax return? I am registered but have never submitted a return. I find the sars website a little confusing as they state: 'You are liable to pay income tax if you earn more than R63 556 in the 2013 year of assessment, and are younger than 65 years of age. ' BUT also state: 'What is the threshold for the non-submission of ITR12 returns for individuals for the 2013 year of assessment?Although a taxpayer still has to register for income tax he/...

I am starting a retail store business, selling hand-made products. This business will be run as a sole proprietorship and the premises for the store will be leased from the property owner.
I have never registered for income tax (personal or company) before.
I forecast turnover of about R300,000 per year and am considering registering for SARS turnover tax.
If I do register for the turnover tax would I still need to register for personal income tax? I have set up a separate busin...

I own two properties. Property A is my primary residence, and is bonded for R700k. Property B is a rental property, is valued at R1m and is bonded for R500k. I make a rental profit from Property B after deducting the loan interest and all other deductible expenses, and thus pay tax on that net income. My idea is to register a second bond on Property B for an additional R500k, and transfer that money into the bond of Property A. The increased interest paid on the combined bonds of Property B woul...

Hi TaxTim
I am trying to finish off filling out my tax form and came across the home expenses deduction.
With my former company I was working from my rented flat of which I had one room demarcated for work fitted with a desk, chair and fax/printer/copier machine.
I am confused currently as I am not renting that place anymore and not working for that company anymore and am not sure if I am entitled to claim and if so what can I claim. I paid R4600 for rent monthly and the space took up 20% of the whole area. ...
