How do I take advantage of the R500,000 tax free portion AT RETIREMENT? I was retrenched at age 54 and paid full tax on my retrenchment lump sum. Now that I am 56 and would like to retire on the funds in my pension preservation fund, I do not understand why the tax directive on the first R500,000 from my preservation fund was taxed. I have NEVER retired before so I should have the full R500,000 tax free ON RETIREMENT?? Numerous calls to the SARS call centre have me confused between benefits at ...

Received notification from SARS to supply proof of expenses claimed on personal tax return for the 2009 years, which was already assessed, re assessed by SARS in Nov 09 and April 2010. Outstanding fees were duly paid in Nov 09. All proof of expenses were duly supplied. IS SARS allowed to re assess again in Sept 2015?
SARS has also request the same for the 2010 year, 2010 was assessed and no proof of expenses were requested. A refund of -R6k was paid over by SARS to me. IS SARS allowe...

Hi, I submitted a tax return via SARS eFiling which tax returned an assessment that I owe SARS R2500. Puzzled by this I asked a friend and she advised that I had entered the number of dependents for Medical Aid incorrectly. I filed a correction and SARS now owes me R2700. The statement, however reflects an amount of R200 and reflects the incorrect R2500. Surely that shouldn't count or am I missing something?
I called SARS and was told they focus only on the original assessment. I am ...

Hi Tax Tim
I am very pleased with the work that you are doing here. Keep up the great work!!!
I submitted my tax return to SARS about a month ago and they selected me for verification/an audit because I had a refund payable to me. I submitted all the documentation they required (logbook, receipts etc), but they have recently responded with an addditional assessment stating that I owe them money - which cant be the case, as I am a 100% commission earner (with no basic salary) and I dont have a tax directive...

Hi Tim, I have recently completed my tax return. I received a first assessment that said I owed SARS 7630 but I was selected for verification. After the verification process, I received another assessment that reflected R0 amount. But it appears I still owe the initial 7630. Firstly, I don't understand the different conclusions reached in the two assessments and why the first one appears to hold still. Second, my total taxable income for the year being assessed is unusual in the sense that it in...

Hi Tim... I was flagged for an audit and SARS also phoned for alternative documents. I have 2 questions. One is... SARS office says that after the email was send to the bookkeepers notifying us of the " audit" it takes 30-90 days to complete and that they are not allowed to take any longer than that. How true is this and two.... Based on what evidence can SARS refuse to pay out your refund to you? I have been submitting my tax return for the last 7 years now, always got my money within 2 weeks ...
