WHAT ARE DEDUCTIBLE EXPENSES FOR SELF-EMPLOYED SURGEONS

  Written by Marc

I am a self-employed surgeon in the private sector. My business is my primary source
of income with most expenses [ including the astronomical amount for my insurance!] being
covered by it.

How do I fill in my tax return? What can my deductible expenses be? I travel to congresses
regularly and cover most of those expenses on my own.

When I was employed in the state sector it was much easier with my IRP5 Form.

Does SARS charge a penalty on the late submission of an income tax return with a refund

  Written by Marc

Hi TaxTim,

This year was my first year of employment and as such I registered for tax. Additionally, I only received a salary for two months during the tax year (January and February). I therefore fall below the tax threshold and should receive a refund of the PAYE that was paid.

I am busy trying to register on e-Filing in order to submit my tax return on time (before the deadline of 21 November 2014). SARS has however requested that I go to the SARS branch to verify my banking details in order to successfully register me on e-Filing....

SARS souce code 4112

On my IT 3(b) I have for SARS source code 4112 (Foreign withholding tax on dividends) an amount of -R 68.93.But eFiling does not allow me to enter a negative value for SAR source code 4112When I posed this question to 2 of my investment institutions, I got 2 different answers. The 1 said:Make it a positive value and the other said:The tax in question is one that has already been deducted by the foreign constituent in the country of origin(appears as a negative value), it should therefore not be d...

If you're a freelancer who earns below R70 700, do you have to submit a provisional tax return?

  Written by Marc

I am a freelancer but I earned under the R70 700 threshold. Do I have to register for provisional tax? Some people have told me that I have to submit a provisional tax return anyway while reflecting on the return that my taxable income was zero. Seems stupid.

How long does it take for new bank details to be verified?

  Written by Marc

How long does it take for new bank details to be verified? I went into a SARS branch and submitted all documents, and received a confirmation email saying that my 'updated registered particulars can be viewed on efiling'. However, my bank details have not updated on efiling, and it won't let me submit my return until the new details have been verified. Tax returns are due next week Friday

Depreciation Disallowed?

  Written by Marc

On my previous ITA34 SARS said that the amount refundable to me was R-6153.46 (there was a depreciation value of R2533.00 for a laptop that I use for work purposes). Now I have received a new ITA34 assessment stating that I owe SARS R633.25. The statement says DEPRECIATION DISALLOWED.

I sent them the original purchase tax receipt for the laptop, was I supposed to send them something else? What must I do now?

IRP5 form reflecting less periods than worked, but correct remuneration.

  Written by Marc

My company was acquired by 24.com halfway through last year.
On my IRP5 form it lists 4 periods since we were taken over, but only 6 periods for the time prior to that instead of 8 to make up the full 12 tax months that I was working for.

The remuneration is correct and reflects my payment for all 12 months, but with only 10 periods reflecting and not 12, I am nervous SARS will assume I am paid more monthly than I actually am and move me into a higher tax bracket or claim more tax from me? Please can you advise, I want to submit my IRP5 in time but not its financially detrimental to me and my other colleagues and payroll doesn't seem to know what's potting. ...

Where do I enter the capital gain for unit trusts on my tax return

  Written by Marc

I have an IT3c unit trust provisional consolidated capital gains tax certificate in front of me. I need to fill in the capital gain for my unit trust under code 4250. I believe I need to select the last question on the first page saying - have you received any additional income. From there it gets rather confusing because it asks me under capital gain what assets and how many I have disposed of? Where do I just fill in the capital gain for unit trusts? If I say that I have disposed of assets and...
