Can taxes be deducted if you have never earned more that R40 000p/a?

  Written by Marc

Hi Tim

My husband earns about R44 000p/a. For the past 3 months, money has been taken out of his account by SARS. According to them, it is outstanding taxes from years passed when he neglected to pay his taxes, however this is the most he's ever earned.

Is that at all possible with his salary?

Medical Tax Credit - does same rule apply to non medical aid taxpayers?

  Written by Marc

Goodday, my question regards the Medical Tax Credit - everything I have read on it seems to apply to taxpayers that contribute to a medical aid scheme. Does the same rule apply for taxpayers who do not have a medical aid scheme but are trying to claim back medical expenses?

Tax on rental income, bond in two names.

  Written by Marc

I am co-owner of a townhouse and we are in the process of letting it. I understand that we can offset certain expenses (of a non-capital nature) to the income, to alleviate tax paid thereon. But now there is still the question of how to "split" the income and expenditure between the two taxpayers in question? We are engaged and have a 50/50 interest in the townhouse and all costs and expenses are shared between the two of us at the same ratio. Please advise.

Medical aid in my name, but wife pays for it

  Written by Marc

The medical is in my name, but my wife pays for it. Who gets the benefit of including it on your tax tax directive? Myself or my wife, since we both have different tax numbers. Thanks. We are married, outside community of property, anti-nuptual with accrual.

Cell phone depreciation

  Written by Marc

I took out a 24 month cell phone contract at the end of January 2013 that I pay for on a monthly basis. My phone is used for business and personal purposes. I wish to write off my cell phone as a depreciation deduction (source code 4027). The cell phone handset is valued at around R6 799. Does this mean that I can write off the full amount of R6 799 for the 2013 tax year as it is less than R7000? What can I use as proof for SARS? A letter from the cell phone company confirming the value of the h...

This is a really helpful forum.

I have a query which I require advice on or a possible solution.
I completed my tax return on the 14 July 2013. In the prior year I received my refund in 2 days but this year I had been selected for verification and I submitted all the documents (logbook etc) and then few days later (23 July 2013) I get a notice letter from SARS saying I'm referred for audit (sad I know), so I waited and yesterday I had no response from SARS regards the referred for audit. ...

Never submitted a tax return - what kind of tax penalties are there?

  Written by Marc

Hi Tim,

One of my family members has never submitted a tax return and only actually registered for tax about a year ago. He has been working for about 13 years. That being said, 4 of those 13 years he worked overseas (he worked on the cruise ships were he earned tips only), for 3 years he worked as a waiter where he earned cash and was paid a minimum wage and 5 years as a restaurant manager where tax was deducted from his monthly salary, however, he was never registered for tax by his employer or on an individual capacity. Like I said, he only registered and got a tax number last year (2012). ...

No medical aid, medical expenses paid out of pocket

  Written by Marc

Hi,

I don't belong to a medical aid, so I had medical expenses to the value of R21473.34 (kept proof of payments). I had income of R75485, and PAYE deducted of R2144. A refund of only R2144 shows on my IT34. It seems as if the medical aid expenses was not taken into account at all. Please explain?

How to reflect transfer of Pension Fund to Retirement Annuity on ITR12?

  Written by Marc

Hello, Within the last tax year I changed jobs and in doing so had to transfer my pension fund from my former employer to my Retirement Annuity as my new employer does not offer a pension fund. On my ITR12 issued on e-filing I can see this lump sum pension fund amount reflected on a separate page with a directive number. Also I received a certificate from my Retirement Annuity institute reflecting my contributions for the tax year and this included the lump sum the I transferred.
