  Written by Marc

I recieve additional income from rental. I have an agreement with my tenants that they pay a percentage of the electricity and rates bill, the ADSL bill and the domestic staff. Can I claim back expenses against PAYE that relate to an income I have not yet received?

  Written by Marc

Thank you very much making this forum available to us.
I work as a salaried software developer 160 hours a month, I earn a salary and pay PAYE. I also work at home doing work for a client. I will only be able to collect an income from the client after the system I'm developing is complete, which will probably be in around 8 months, this is simply the nature of the business. I'd like to know if I am entitled to claim any expenses that I am currently paying to support the work I'm doing for...

How to read original and additional assessment from SARS.

  Written by Marc

I was employed in South Africa from Jan'2011 till 1st Aug'2013 (relocated to USA). I have filed my tax in 2011 and 2012.

Now I filed my tax return for 2013 through eFiling with all supporting documents. Post submission, I got an original assessment which showed me a credit of (ZAR -37,000); however it was also selected for audit and today after a month, there is another version of IT34 uploaded which shows an amount of (ZAR 820) which I need to pay to SARS. They have also mentioned that this IT34 doesn't show any amount calculated in previous assessment and that my statement balance is now (ZAR 37000 - ZAR 820 = 36,180)....

I started earning extra wages outside of my salary in February 2013 and so I have registered for provisional tax. What is an AP34?

  Written by Marc

There is an AP34 on my efiling 'main page' that shows an amount owed to SARS for 'ITR12 non-submission 2010'. I requested an account statement and the balance on the statement is R0. Now I don't know: do I or don't I owe SARS money? All my returns are currently up to date - I had outstanding returns last year, but got a bookkeeper to get everything up to date. She submitted all the documents requested by SARS after disputing a revised assessment of 2010 - the dispute was allowed, all penalties ...

Do SARS have the right to dictate where my refund is paid out?

  Written by Marc

I went to verify my bank details at a SARS office only to find I have a third party bank account and I quote from SARS website "A third party account is an account where there is a main member but a secondary member has signing authority. No change of banking details will be allowed by a third party. If the secondary member is the taxpayer to whom a refund is due, he/she will have to open his/her individual bank account."
I have a problem with this. I closed my personal account to avoid du...

  Written by Marc

Hi there, my brother started his own company and wishes to register for VAT. His company was registered on the 16 July this year. Prior to this he made purchases of machinery. Is there a possibility that that the vat registration could be applied retrospectively so that this VAT can be claimed? Also can the VAT on machinery purchases be claimed if the purchase was made after the company registration?
Thank you!

Tax on income working permanently in the UAE and declaring of such.

  Written by Marc

Hi Tim,
I left SA on 1/9/2011 to take up a permanent employment in UAE, with a UAE company. I also took up residency in the UAE. I sold all my fixed assets in SA, except for my primary residence, which I left for the children to complete their university studies from. Car Allowance - Available deductions and Documents required

  Written by Marc

My salary was structured in such a way that I have a car allowance of approx R5,5k and my contract states that due to this allowance I will be required to use my personal vehicle for company purposes. My question is - how will it be determined and what documents do I need to keep in order to have any available deductions? Please note that...
