  Written by Marc

I submitted my tax return by eFiling on the 25th.7.2014 was then asked to submit supporting documents, which I forwarded on the 28th, and I'd have to wait 5 days for a response. after 7 days, I called into the call centre again. I was informed the submitting documents have been received but not captured yet. I was also informed that the documents are going for auditing and this could take 30 days.

  Written by Marc

I own an investment property. The rental agent has advised me that in I can increase my monthly rental markedly by doing various improvements. Can this be construed then as expenses in the production of income, or must the improvements be capitalized? Ideally I would want to expense at least a portion of the improvements.

Received a Reduced Assessment due to provident fund discrepancy

  Written by Marc

Help, I just received a REDUCED ASSESSMENT ITA34 from SARS. I submitted my tax return but at that time for tax period 2013/2014 I hadn't received a small portion I cashed from my company provident fund to settle study debt when I left me previous company on the 28th Feb 2014.

My original assessment indicated I was due -R9,460.29, the latest assessment indicates that I'm only due -R0.19. Reason for the Reduced Assessment is "Income no declared".

The Provident Fun withdrawal amount was R137,769, I withdrew R32,152.29...

SARS delayed claim on penalties?

  Written by Marc

Yesterday 04 August 2014, SARS informed me, for the First Time, that there is a reoccurring penalty against me from 2007 - 2008. I resigned from my job as we were moving, so I only worked 2 months for that tax year earning only R9000.00 in total for the year.
I started to work again in 2011 and did my TAX returns, at that point SARS told me there where no outstanding penalties.
I have no proof of anything as legally I must keep papers for 5 years, thereafter I dispose of them.

What does "SARS has issued correspondence which requires your attention" mean?

  Written by Marc

I've received an email from SARS stating "SARS has issued correspondence for xxxxx which requires your attention, to view either navigate to the respective work page or the SARS correspondence menu". When I go to the correspondence menu it tells me "there are no records available for your selection". So what does this email mean if there's nothing there? I've submitted my return and received a refund 2 days later.
Many thanks
Carol

Owning a second property with no real rental income and the implications on tax

  Written by Marc

I own a second property which is an apartment in a small block of flats. My in-laws are the tenants so I don't charge rent. However, they do pay the monthly levies for the apartment.
Since I don't charge rent, would the monthly levies that they pay be seen as an income to me from the apartment? (As the owner of the property, I would normally have to pay this). Expenses that I incur on the property are rates & taxes, bond interest and insurance. These expenses exceed the monthly levies....
