Retirement & Provident Withdrawal Tax Refund

  Written by Marc

Good day, on the 25 January 2014 I changed employment and had a withdrawal from my previous employees Retirement and Provident funds of approximately R57200.00 each and I only got approx R42000 deposited in my bank on each. I was taxed on both payouts but does not seem like I am getting a refund on them. On my ITR12 I can see the one payout from Liberty (R57200.00 on source code 3920) but not the other and my issue is that my total rebate is only R 74.00. I really dont think this seems right?

Transfer from one retirement annuity fund to another - how to handle on efiling?

  Written by Marc

During the 2013/2014 tax year I moved a retirement annuity from one fund to another. As part of this process the accumulated value in the "old" RA was paid over as a lump sum into the "new" RA.

As a result, the "old" fund issued me with an IT3a for the lump sum payout. This IT3a used code 3920 for the lump sum payout, with an additional code 4 indicating it is a tax exempt lump sum payment (there is also a tax directive number on the IT3a).

How do I handle this on eFiling when completing my income tax return?...

Office Expenses Disallowed?

  Written by Marc

I have submitted my tax return and submitted the supporting documentation after a request to do so for an assessment/audit. I have received the outcome of the assessment to say that the home office expenses are disallowed. Which is odd, seeing as I went through the same process last year (including assessment) and they were allowed. I have two IRP5's from different employers and for the one, I 100% do the work from home. Is it worth disputing the outcome of the assessment or should I just le...

Tax on interest when abroad

  Written by Marc

Regarding the residency question - If you earn interest(South African source) with no other income, spend more than 183 days out of the country, will that interest be subject to tax. Lets assume the interest earned is R250 000 for the year. If this isn't tax free, would the opposite be true where by the interest is from a foreign source yet you are resident in SA but do spend more than 183 days out of the country.
