SARS status "Return assessed" - what does this mean?

  Written by Evan

Hi, Please assist. I did my tax return on SARS eFiling on the 1st of July. Not chosen for validation or audit. I have not yet received the money although online it states that the SARS STATUS is return assessed. What does this mean?

I did phone the call centre and they did not say anything about being audited or submitting supporting documents they only advised to wait. Kindly assist.

Audit income tax but unemployed

  Written by Evan

I used to be employed, but from 02/2014 to now I am not. I submitted a nil tax return and have now been selected for audit. They are asking for documents.

What can I send them when I said I was unemployed and I did not claim anything. Do they go into my bank account without me knowing or should I email them bank statements? There are deposits in my bank but that is just transfers from my various accounts. No income. Please help. Thank you for the great site.

Calculations of refund after submitting correction

  Written by Evan

I completed my SARS tax return. My IT34 said I was being paid an amount back. I then realised I had made a R40 error on my tax return for my laptop depreciation. So I amended on my tax return and re-submitted. My calculation then said I was receiving about R4 less than before. Once submitted I received an IT34 stating I had to pay SARS R4. Which is the correct IT34 now? I can't possibly lose all the money I was getting back for changing an amount by R40? I was also requested to submit the laptop...

Why can't I get R21,000 initially?

  Written by Evan

Hi Tim, thanks for a wonderfully informative site.
On SARS eFilings my tax returns were different from that of what I have on my IRP5 mailed to me by my work, so I corrected it. Which came back as me owing R16000 to SARS so I disputed and loaded the original on, now it shows I'm entitled to a refund after R21000-16000.

I submitted documents as requested and I'm also for audit. My question is will they pick up that I made an error initially and not refund me for the entire amount...

Is professional registration and education fees tax deductable?

  Written by Evan

I have just filed a tax return through you but could not find a place for deducting professional fees. This includes having to pay and annual registration fee as Psychologist as well as having to attend professional education sessions to maintain my registration. The combined amount comes to about R2100. Is this not deductible? My company, City of Cape Town does not pay for this as they see it as part of my Total Cost to Company and I have to pay it myself.

SARS refund payment period

  Written by Evan

Good day,

I have submitted my tax return and SARS owes me a refund. About 4 days has passed so I contacted SARS and asked them what the reason is why my refund is being held back, they told me it is because I have not submitted my 2012 tax return, so I did. After I submitted my return for 2012 as well, I contacted them again and inquired if there is anything else that they need from me in order for me to receive my refund and they said no that everything is in order and that there is ...

Unsure about source codes 3697 and 3698

  Written by Evan

If I have the below amounts on my IRP 5:

75,000. 00 - 3601
90,610. 00 - 3616

Would it fall under the following codes on my IRP 5 if the company does not deduct any retirement benefits bearing in mind that I was first a contractor from Mar - Aug.

75,000. 00 - 3697
90,610. 00 - 3698

Does these codes get taxed differently?

  Written by Evan

Hi,

Please can you perhaps give me some advice? I am busy doing my tax return now and only thinks of it now... I don't have a bank account anymore and my salary etc is getting paid into my Dad's account. What must I do and how must I make to claim it now?

My ID and passport got stolen and I first need to get them before I can open my own account again. Is there any way that SARS can pay the money into the account my salary gets paid to?

Please if you can give me ...

Claim for home expenses

  Written by Evan

If I use your service, will my fee paid to you be deducted to the return and is there a guarantee I will get paid back for the home expenses? I do have a receipt for my laptop and printer, including measurements of the office space which is separate from the house (attached to the garage). I pay a bond for the house, rates and services. I am not sure how to calculate other things like my garden and the helper fees.

Wear and tear allowance on sars code 3713

  Written by Evan

I received a laptop allowance on a monthly basis. Laptop belongs to me. This appears on my IRP5 under source code 3713. I received this over 3 years. Can I claim a wear and tear allowance against this income?

I'm confused if I should claim over 3 years or just a single year as I've read different responses online. Also what supporting docs would SARS require? Would the tax invoice of my laptop be sufficient? Thanks

SARS refund delayed question.

Medical tax credit if I am sponsoring my Mom's medical aid?

  Written by Evan

I am an employed person and have no trouble doing my tax return with SARS e-filing. What I would like to know is the following: Since October 2013 I have been paying my Mom's medical aid, she is a 70 year old pensioner (state pension grant) and not registered for tax. She is not on my medical aid as it is more affordable to have a separate medical aid for her.

This year she received a tax certificate from her medical aid. Is there any way in which I can claim for her medical aid cont...

Depreciation on passenger vehicle

  Written by Evan

Good day,

I bought a 2002 model car which is still in good condition, in June of last year for a financed amount of R109,990. 00 This vehicle is used on a 50% work and 50% private basis. I do not receive a car allowance and this vehicle is paid out of my own pocket. Is it possible to claim depreciation/wear and tear on this vehicle from SARS?

Am keen to know if I am due a refund or not. Earned R42,000.

  Written by Evan

If I earned only R42000 in 2013, having worked for only three months, and paid R6000 in tax, for that earning, over the whole year, is there a possibility I could get a tax refund based on the primary tax rebates and my medical spend of R1000?

Out of Pocket Medical Expenses

  Written by Evan

My Mom is in her late 80s and stays in her own suite in a retirement home and during the day she is independent. However at night she gets confused and therefore stays in the clinic section of the retirement home where she is monitored by qualified nursing sisters or staff nurses. The charge for the overnight stay in the clinic is added to her monthly account. As she is being looked after by qualified nurses at night can she claim this amount as an out of pocket medical expense?

At what point do you become a provisional tax payer?

  Written by Evan

Hi there. The 2014-2015 tax year will be my second tax season as a self employed 'freelance' architect. Last year when I submitted my tax at SARS they said I do not need to register for provisional tax and that they would 'let me know when I needed to' so I just submitted a summary of my income and expenses to SARS at the normal tax time and they verified everything and all was ok. This year I am earning double what I did last year and feeling a bit concerned that I may have missed the magic line which crosses me over into a provisional tax payer? ...
