4018 on IRP5 - Do I claim on this or not?

  Written by Evan

I have no external RA or income protection policies, just what ever the company offers. I see that I have a 4018 deduction on my IRP5 for R980. When doing my tax returns do I select I have a RA/income protection on the form wizard which populates the fields to enter? Do I fill this amount in, as if I do I break even and then do not owe, but if I leave it out I owe SARS.

I was told that this was not to be filled in as its a deduction on my IRP5 and is already calculated but I do not ...

Claiming medical expenses for birth

  Written by Evan

I am confused and need assistance. I spent in the region of R50000 on medical expenses in September 2014 as my wife gave birth. I paid this all in cash as I am not on medical aid. Is there any way I can claim any of this back when I submit my tax return?

Status after audit?

  Written by Evan

I submitted my tax return on the 7/7, I was then asked to submit documents which I did on the 9/7. I received an ITSA on the 10/07. Where on the website can I check my status and how long does it usually take for the refund to pay out? According to the IT34, I should be expecting R7k.

Do I enter the whole wear and tear value in my tax return or only the "official" part?

  Written by Evan

When calculating the wear and tear on my car I take the original cash purchase price and divide that by 5. Do I then enter that value in my tax return (same as all other deductions) and SARS then automatically calculate the "official" part thereof from the kilometers I entered, or do I do the calculation myself and then enter the "official" part in the tax return?

Two IRP5 - why is refund lower?

  Written by Evan

I have two IRP5s, when I submit each tax return individually my refundable amount on one is - R28000 on and -R24000 on the other. When I add them together my total refundable amount is -R18000?

I don't understand how the amount would come down? Surely they should be added together?

SARS Refund is a large amount of money. Why and how?

  Written by Evan

Hi

I just completed my tax return and my ITA34 (whatever it's called) showed an amount of R15 000 is refundable to me. Of course, SARS requested proof of documentation; I only uploaded my Retirement Tax Certificate and Medical Aid Tax Certificate - are there any other forms outstanding?

My question is: Why would I be (hopefully) receiving so much money? I started a new position (meaning higher salary and position upgrade) in September 2014 - could this have an impact?

Never claimed for a tax refund before, is it possible to get refunds for every year since I worked?

  Written by Evan

I have never claimed for a tax refund ever since I started working, so I need clarity on whether I can claim for every year since I have been employed, I have all my IRP5's, and I'm not so sure if I will get a return on some of them. So I need to know if it is possible that I do not get a tax refund, I pay medical aid, UIF, Provident fund etc. I am actually afraid that I will pay you guys and not get anything in return. Your response will be highly appreciated. Thank You.

Wrong filing of tax provisional instead of individual

  Written by Evan

Good day. I filled my tax via SARS e filing for 201 and it triggered an audit. I got a refund after providing the docs, then after a few days I decided to call the SARS call centre. The guy on the other side told me that I need to file for 2009 and 2011 and that I made a mistake and I filed for provisional tax. They fined me for R2900 interest, now I owe them according to the efilling at the SARS branch. They were not very helpful either, the lady told me I must jus...

Is the amount on the requested statement of account final to be refunded to me

Must my penalty be paid before refund is due?

  Written by Evan

Hi Tim. I submitted my tax return and contacted SARS where they confirmed that my audit has been finalized and I received the letter confirming this. My question is what will happen to the R579 penalty?

Some say my payment will be withheld. Some say SARS will deduct this from my refund, and some say its my responsibility to pay the penalty ASAP. Should SARS not deduct this from my refund for 2015? Please confirm what will actually happen.

I am charged by my previous employer to my IRP5 for FY 2006

  Written by Evan

I have submitted my 2015 tax on the 01 July 2015 on SARS eFiling and I had a refund of R2200.00 and now SARS told me that I have an outsanding tax return for 2006, however I request my tax return on SARS eFiling for FY 2006 its not populated with the figures even if I refresh my IT12. Also when I my IRP5 from my previous employee this the request I have got:

Tax law only requires us to keep IRP5's for 5 years. However, we have them saved electronically going back to 2008 so if we are able to help the contractor, we will of course do so at no charge, but unfortunately, the IRP5's from prior to 2008 have been archived and are stored offsite...

What constitutes business mileage if I stay temporarily closer to work?

  Written by Evan

I live in one city and my normal office is in the city. I am currently involved in a project in another city which takes me away there for extended periods. I have a flat in the other city which I stay in while I am working there. What constitutes business mileage? I would think travel from home to the distant site would be business mileage. However probably not the daily commute in from my flat. Is this correct, or would the total distance away from my home be business mileage?

Tax up to date but SARS saying I owe them

  Written by Evan

Last year all my outstanding previous years 2006 to 2014 was brought up to date via SARS eFiling and finally having to go into SARS to submit documents. After accumulative penalties deducted (R14k) and an audit I still managed to get a refund which was paid to me 15 July 2014 (11k).

This season 1 July 2015 I submitted my tax return, again I was selected for audit. SARS requested supporting docs which I submitted as per notification and I'm due a refund. Today I contacted SARS to inquire what the hold up was regarding my refund (R5k) and was informed that I owe SARS R4k which I have to settle first before I can receive my refund. ...
