Tax on extra income from a hobby

I have a full time job where I earn a taxable income and do my tax returns as usual. I also have a photography hobby that provides a minor extra income on a very irregular basis from a few private shoots I do. I would like to know whether or not I have to declare this and pay tax on this extra income if it is only a hobby and not a full time business?

Filing historic return with missing IRP5

My wife has submitted her tax return for 2015 and a refund is due to her. SARS is requesting that she file tax returns for 2007 and 2008 before the refund is processed. She changed employment during 2007. The company she worked for is unable to supply her with an IRP5 as it is over 5 years old. What does she do it this case?

Since medical aid now reduces the monthly taxable amount on your salary, does this mean it will not increase your refund amount when you submit tax returns?

I submitted my tax return through SARS e filing on the 1st July 2015; got results on 07/08/15. On the 08/07 I got correspondence that I didn't file/submit tax return for 2011 and I was not working on that year. I submitted an affidavit on the 08/07 and until now I'm not getting the money SARS owe me back. What may be the delay?

Is private studies to become a Pastor, whilst being in full time employ of an engineering firm, tax deductible? Is the tithes paid to my local church monthly, tax deductible, if so, what deduction code does this fall under?

Hi Tim, I just wanted to find out, I filled in my tax return and according the IT34, SARS owes me a refund. How long do the refunds normally take because the bottom block doesn't say I need to submit documents and today is already the 4th working day?

Do the Levies on a rental property count as an expense towards the "business" and if so, what category should that fall under eg: Administration fees?

Hey Taxtim. I submitted my tax returns on the 10th of July this year. SARS informed me that I would get a refund of about R17000, which I desperately need. After a few days I called them to ask when I might receive this refund, they informed me that they are not going to give it to me yet as I have outstanding tax returns for 2012.

I am a commissioner earner and received a tax directive for 18% from SARS for the 2015 tax year. What benefits are there to having a tax directive? Will I have to pay back on my tax return or will SARS calculate my tax at 18% according the tax directive?

I had a low income job for 11 months of the year. My yearly income would have been under the threshold, so I never paid any tax. I am not sure if my employer registered me, but I never received any tax documents or tax number. In February 2015 I started a new job with a higher salary. My yearly salary now puts me above the threshold and my new employer registered me and I've been paying tax since Feb. But since I only did this job for 1 month of the last tax year, my yearly income for 2014/2015 tax year remains under the threshold of R70 700. ...

My tax practitioner did my IRP5. I must get a refund of 3115 Rand. I have no outstanding funds that I owe money for SARS. I wait 8 days. I get nothing, no response.

Car allowance 100% taxed as other allowance

Towards the end of the year I received a car allowance. However at this stage I was not sure of how many kilometers would be done for business. Therefore the allowance is now reflected as other allowance and is taxed 100%. How do I now file my tax returns against travel as it is not reflected under 3701 or 3702 on the IRP5?

I am a South African employee working for a South African company. I have been living and working abroad while still earning a salary in South Africa. How long do I need to stay out of South Africa for in order to not be taxed for the period I am abroad?
