Scared because amount refundable to me is negative amount

  Written by Evan

I have just submitted my tax and it says the following "Thank you for submitting your income tax return for the 2015 year of assessment. Your assessment has been concluded and reflects an amount refundable to you of R -11958. 52"

Does that mean I owe SARS R11958. 52?

Home office, and tax expense deductions

  Written by Evan

I have two questions:

1. Under what circumstances can one claim "home office" deductions (code 4028)? And what items can one claim?

2. What can one claim a deduction for under code 4043 "allowable accountancy expense"? (Eg. If a tax practitioner filed our tax return last year, would be able to claim that expense?)

Thank you!

May I deduct for depreciation on photographic equipment bought in 2010 now being used for work?

  Written by Evan

I bought photographic equipment over a period since 2010, the last in February 2015. My previous employer supplied me with equipment to do my job, with the result that I was not allowed any tax deductions for wear-and-tear (depreciation). At my current employer I am using my own equipment on a base of about 60% for work and 40% for private use. Am I allowed to deduct in 2015 for equipment bought since 2010 until 2015?

Foreign Earned Income

  Written by Evan

Hi, I am wondering about the tax I pay, if any, if I am earning my income overseas. In my case I earn in Indonesia, and the money gets deposited into an Indonesian account. I would like to send my money back to South Africa though. I would only be in South Africa for 1 to 2 months of the year. What tax would I have to pay, if any?

How do you know SARS is done with Verification?

  Written by Evan

Hi Tim

I have submitted 3 tax returns this tax season for assessment (2010, 2011 and 2015). SARS had selected me for verification for the 2010 and 2011 assessment years and I have consequently submitted the required documents for review via SARS eFiling.

SARS has issued correspondence for the 2010 assessment year saying "We refer to the verification of your assessment for the 2010 tax period. Please note that no adjustment has been made to this assessment". They also issued an additional assessment (ITA34) for the 2011 assessment year and the initial amount due to me has not changed. ...

  Written by Evan

I am employed by the Department of Education (admin) and I get an additional amount from the School Governing Body for extra work done after hours and weekends. I pay 25% PAYE on this extra income.

However, I'm also doing debtors for a company on an online system as an independent contractor (20 hours per month) for which they do not deduct PAYE. I work at home and with no supervision. I have not registered this as any sort of business.
