Tax Refund for people on work permit leaving the country forever

  Written by Evan

I am a non South African passport holder and have been working in Johannesburg on work permit from January 2014 till June 2015. I have left the country in June 2015. So my question is how do apply for a tax refund for the tax that was deducted in the months of April'15, May'15 and June 2015. The return would obviously be required to be filed now in the next year i. E. 2016. So is there any way that I could claim the refund now ?

Thanks

How best to set up my photography business with regards to taxation?

  Written by Evan

Hello Tax Tim I work as an analyst full time; and in my free time I follow my passion for music and photography and take photos at festivals, clubs, pubs and other events. I have been building up a profile over the past few years of my work and now I have artists and their relative management agencies showing interest in procuring some of my images.

I have not registered a company yet, nor have I sold any images as I first want to ensure I set up my "business" and contract documents correctly so my clients and I are covered fairly and equally...

Medical expenses for disabled husband (non Medical Aid contributor)

  Written by Evan

Hi there, My husband is disabled and I do not have medical aid but I pay for his chronic medication and doctors visits out of my pocket for the year. This amounts to between R 25 - R 35,000 p/year. Am I able to claim anything back against this medical expenses? Under code 4020 perhaps? My annual income is between R 180000 - R 200000 p/ year. (7. 5% = - R 13,5 - R15000) - Can I claim the difference in expenses without being on medical aid? Thank you for your assistance in this regard.

PAYE deduction differs from tax tables

  Written by Evan

Hi, I have been looking at my PAYE Deductions from my employer and comparing them to the published PAYE Tables from SARS for each relevant year. I even tried to use your tax calculator which also gave the me the SARS Taxtable PAYE deduction amount. I have noticed that in the Payslips we get generated from Pastel Payroll, the PAYE deductions are roughly R150-R220 higher than the same Taxable salary deduction amount according to the SARS Tax table. I know 150 odd Rand doesn't seem like much but ov...

Correct PAYE deduction by employer

  Written by Evan

Hi Tax Tim, My gross salary is R7625. PAYE of R866 was being deducted from my salary for the 2015 tax year. I am aware that more was being deducted than necessary. Please advise what should have been deducted and how this will affect my tax return?

Two employers. Do I have to register as a provisional tax payer?

  Written by Evan

I receive an income from two employers. R10 000 from the one, who obviously deducts PAYE and R4500 from the other, who does not deduct PAYE, as the amount falls under the threshold.

Do I have to register as a provisional tax payer or can I register at the end of the year when assessments are due? I have never registered to file a tax return before, as my income has always been exempt from having to file tax returns. This will be my first time filing a tax return.

3 work related expenses, where do I allocate them and how much?

  Written by Evan

I spent R4 085.53 on vehicle maintenance tyres, 25/08/2014. I spent R25 748.85 on cellular bills, at least 60 to 70 percent of this annual bill was work related (14/15). I spent R5 553.44 on vehicle insurance for the year (14/15).

My question is, where would I associate these expenses to?

Can dependent claim Medical Aid portion they pay?

If my spouse pays her portion of the Medical Aid (and half of our child's medical aid), can she claim this back from SARS, even though I am the Main Member? Obviously when I submit my tax return it would be less this portion.

Car allowance for not owned vehicle

  Written by Evan

I am receiving a car allowance as I am using my own car and am a sales rep. The car is not in my name, it's in my brothers name, but I am paying him an amount of R3200.00 per month. SARS requested me to send them the lease agreement or similar in order to complete my audit, what can I sent to them?
I also entered the cost price on my SARS eFiling as R150000 instead of R105000, how do I get that corrected?

Claiming for elderly dependants medical aid contributions - Supporting documents

  Written by Evan

My parents are both pensioners and dependent on me financially. I pay for their medical aid, while I am on another medical aid. I have included both medical aids on my tax return, with the appropriate number on dependents noted every month.

SARS has asked for supporting documents to be submitted. I submitted: yearly contribution summaries from both medical aids, monthly invoices from my parent's medical aid addressed to me with my bank account details on them, debit order statement from my bank showing both being deducted every month as well as a covering letter explaining the situation. ...

Learnership agreement tax deductions

  Written by Evan

I am a permanent employee at a company that trades and makes money from an aviation sector. We are a charter company basically. Am I correct in saying that if I enter into a registered learnership agreement with my company doing a course that is aviation-related, can my company claim deductions for said learnership agreement?

I stand corrected but it should be R30 000 per 12 month period and R30 000 for completion. I am also a permanent employee does this make a difference when enter...

IRP5 banking details differ at SARS

  Written by Evan

An employee in my department had his salary paid into his wife's bank account. Upon the entity providing him with his IRP 5, he stated that the HR department must have requested the information which he would like to have on his IRP 5, probably because now his registered details with SARS, (banking details), will not correspond to the details on his IRP5.

Is the onus not on the employee to provide the company with valid and correct banking details?
Or can the employee change t...

Travel Allowance and take home pay

Paying my Mother's medical aid

  Written by Evan

I pay my Mother's medical aid premiums. These deduct from my savings account via a debit order every month. My Mother is fully dependent on myself financially (no income, no assets, nothing). She is 62 years of age. She is NOT disabled. She receives a SASSA grant. Her Medical aid is in her own name, and she is the main member. The reason she is not on my medical aid, is because my medical aid wanted to add a loading to her premium.

Can I claim this monthly premiums back from SARS?

Separating IRP5 related sales from income total

  Written by Evan

I run a small business which sells research services. It's a sole prop, but when I'm contracted by university it generates an IRP5. In my income tax return, when it asks, after the question about the value of sales, if there is any income reflected on an IRP5, does that mean I shouldn't include the IRP5 income in my total sales figure? Also, where (and what rate) do I claim insurance for necessary equipment such as my car, computer, and phone?
