How much tax to pay new employee

  Written by Evan

I'm starting a small business, if I pay an employee R15000 monthly, will he need to get SARS registered and how much tax will be deducted? It is only UIF he is registered for.

Only worked two months of the tax year.

  Written by Marc

I started work in January 2015 and my tax was based on an annual salary however as of February 2015 technically I had only earned 2 months salary and not the full years salary. Would I be correct in saying that I should be refunded the tax I paid in January and February?

Audit/Verification duration

  Written by Marc

Hi, I submitted my 2015 tax return and was selected for audit/verification. The supporting documents were uploaded on the same day (15/08/2015) I am not due for a refund, in fact I had to pay in a small amount, also paid on 15/08/2015. I have not heard anything back from SARS. How long does this normally take?

If I earn between R1000 and R1500 how much tax will I be charged?

  Written by Evan

Hello TaxTim, I'm planning on becoming a tutor at a university that I'm currently at and they told me they need my tax number. I'm not sure exactly how much I'd earn, however I've been told it is not much; actually something like R1000-R1500 per month depending on the module. Would I be expected to pay tax, if yes please kindly tell me how much?

What must I do when they require me to file last years tax return? This year was my first filing

  Written by Marc

This was the first year I've filed a tax return. But I have paying tax via my salary for 4 years. Main reason I haven't filed in the past was because I was told on my salary amount, it was not required. After filing this year I was awarded a refund of R2300 odd. Having been waiting a while for them to pay the money to my accounts. I decided to give them a call and ask what the hold up was. They say they require me to file my tax return for the previous year for them to proceed?

How is tax on share options calculated after death?

  Written by Marc

My dad passed away in Aug 2013 and had a bunch of share options that went into his estate. We sold the share options in Dec 2014, and the estate was wound up and distributed in Feb 2015. However, they taxed the share sale at the maximum tax rate. Should the share sale go into the 2013/2014 tax year when he died, or should it be in 2014/2015 as that's when the sale was actually made? Basically, I want to check if we can claim back the tax paid as it was his only earning in 2014/2015.

What happens after receiving your ITSA?

  Written by Marc

I received my Statement of Account/ITSA 5 days ago, and it's a negative amount. I presume that means I am due for a refund. What's the process after that? Do I wait to receive something else or the refund will be paid?

CPT payment on money held for 3rd party.

  Written by Marc

I have a parent whom gave me money a couple of years back to place in an investment in my name. Recently the entire investment was cashed out and transferred back to said parent. I now have been issued with and IT3(c) reflecting this. My questions are as follows:

1) Though it is not stated on the IT3(c), do I need to pay CPT on the proceeds (SARS code 4205)?
2) If I need to pay CPT, as this money did not belong to me (though the investment was in my name, I did not derive any benefit from it), is there a way in which the CPT can reflect against the party whom the money belonged to?...

Dependant / de-register / required to fill in a tax form if no longer earning a taxable income

  Written by Evan

I am married and a registered tax payer, no longer earning a taxable income. Do I need to de-register as a tax payer and if not, do I need to submit a tax return?

Vehicle expenses for business

  Written by Marc

When I was a sole proprietor, taxed under my own name, if I drove somewhere on business-related matters, I used my own vehicle. I then claimed those business kilometres as a proportion of the total expenses and depreciation on my vehicle over the course of the tax year. Now I have a (registered) private company - can I still follow the same process, and claim the travel expenses as a tax deduction for my BUSINESS? If not, what are the options for me?

Help! SARS has just informed that I need to submit a 2008 Tax Return

  Written by Evan

Good day,

Over the past three weeks, I have been in contact with SARS telephonically regarding a refund due to me for the 2015 Tax Year. I have just been informed that SARS has upgraded their system and I now need to submit a Tax Return for 2008 before they will pay the refund. In 2007, I was employed on a part time basis as a tutor whilst I was in my final year of study at University. After graduating in 2007, I started to work on a full time basis at a company from 1 January 2008. I...

Medical contribution not showing on TaxTim calculator result.

  Written by Marc

On your tax calculator, I have filled in my details, and filled in my medical aid contribution paid by myself for the full year. The amount it calculates is not what I expected, as with the calculation at the bottom of the results, my medical contributions are not taken into account to calculate the result amount. Why are my medical contributions not taken into account when calculating my tax return?
