Hi Tim, I have recently completed my tax return. I received a first assessment that said I owed SARS 7630 but I was selected for verification. After the verification process, I received another assessment that reflected R0 amount. But it appears I still owe the initial 7630. Firstly, I don't understand the different conclusions reached in the two assessments and why the first one appears to hold still. Second, my total taxable income for the year being assessed is unusual in the sense that it in...

Hi Tim... I was flagged for an audit and SARS also phoned for alternative documents. I have 2 questions. One is... SARS office says that after the email was send to the bookkeepers notifying us of the " audit" it takes 30-90 days to complete and that they are not allowed to take any longer than that. How true is this and two.... Based on what evidence can SARS refuse to pay out your refund to you? I have been submitting my tax return for the last 7 years now, always got my money within 2 weeks ...

We run a small hair salon from home for my wife, she does business as a sole-proprietor and the salon is her sole income source. I understand that we can deduct for ease of explanation 10% (amount of space occupied by the salon in relation to the whole property) from all rates and taxes, electricity etc. I am unsure about the interest/rent piece. Can the salon pay "rent" or can you just subtract 10% of the interest on the bond as business expense (bond is in my name). I've also read that deducting this piece as a business expense now can influence your Capital Gains Tax waiver amount when selling the property later on, is this the case?...

I started with a new employer on 1 March 2014 and a full company vehicle is included in my package. Previously I neither had a company car, nor did I receive a travel allowance. My refund this year, as per my ITA34, is much more than in previous years. It seems that the company I work for also deducted almost R1000 per month too much fringe benefit tax from my salary if one compares the SARS calculation to the actual tax paid. I also did not log many private kilometres, since I am not office bound, as a sales rep, and often work from home...
