The Tax Indaba 2017

The Tax Indaba is the largest annual gathering of tax practitioners, in-house tax staff members, government tax officials and tax academics. The Tax Indaba aims to involve all tax professional bodies in South Africa in order to add new variety and talent to benefit tax professionals who are seeking to refresh their knowledge and to learn about new tax-related developments.

To ensure continued relevance, the event is put together with the assistance of the whole tax community. The five-day event is broken down to cover various topics throughout the week, allowing attendees to either choose to attend particular days involving their specialties or to attend the five-day event as a whole

Our very own Marc Sevitz director & CFO of TaxTim will be facilitating one of the two panel discussions at the Tax Indaba, the first of which takes place between 13:30 and 14:15 is called Technological Singularity: I-Robot Versus Tax Man. This panel discussion will focus on how technology is changing the nature of financial information gathering. With the rise of computer programs that aid in day to day tasks we ask, “should tax practitioners be thankful for technology that will ease their workload or should they fear the possibility that the new technology might make them redundant?”.

The next panel discussion will take place between 14:15 – 15:00. Titled, “The Psychology of Tax Behaviour in Times of Recession”. Determinants of tax psychology are always an issue in terms of taxpayer willingness to comply, including the complexity of the tax at issue, the complexity of the overall number of instruments available, ease of compliance, perceived efficacy of the revenue authority, appropriateness of penalties and government’s perceived morality to govern. The panel will provide their varying opinions as to the probable impact of these determinants in the current climate & how taxpayer psychology is said to change during subdued economic periods because less money exists to go around.
