File your tax return by chatting to Claude or ChatGPT
By Ursula Lilje · Updated · 6 minute read
Quick answer
You can now file your tax return inside Claude or ChatGPT
If you already use Claude or ChatGPT for work, admin, or just thinking out loud, you can now use it to do your tax return too.
TaxTim has built a connector that plugs our tax filing service directly into those assistants, so working through your return can feel as simple and familiar as the AI chats you already use every day.
The difference is that TaxTim is behind the conversation. As you answer questions, your information feeds into your real TaxTim return, with TaxTim’s checks, SARS integration and access to registered tax practitioners still available through the TaxTim Helpdesk.
Most importantly, you remain in control throughout. Before anything is submitted, you can review your return, check what has been captured and make sure you are happy with what ultimately goes to SARS.
Why we built it
Most people put off their tax return for the same three reasons. It is hard, it is unfamiliar, and they do not know where to begin.
We have spent years chipping away at all three. Plain English instead of jargon. A conversation instead of a form. This is the next one.
If you already chat to Claude or ChatGPT most days, your return starts in the place you are already typing.
One more way to make tax easy.
What you need
A TaxTim account, and Claude or ChatGPT.
Your TaxTim account is free to create, and you only pay when you file. If you have filed with us before, you already have one.
Claude supports custom connectors on every plan, including free. Free accounts can only have one custom connector at a time, so if you already have one you will need to swap it out. Paid plans have no limit.
ChatGPT needs a paid plan. Custom connectors are available on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education. Free ChatGPT accounts can use connectors from the directory, but cannot add their own server, so TaxTim will not be available there.
How it works
1. Create a free TaxTim account and link your eFiling profile
Start on taxtim.com. Creating an account takes a minute and costs nothing, and you only pay when you file.
While you are there, link your SARS eFiling profile in your Tax Dashboard. This is what lets TaxTim pull your information from SARS and file your return when you are ready.
You can skip this and do it later, but the assistant will send you back to TaxTim when it becomes necessary, so it is quicker to get it done upfront.
2. Add the TaxTim connector
A one-time setup. You add TaxTim to ChatGPT or Claude the same way you would add any other connector, then sign in with your TaxTim email and password to authorise it. The full steps are below.
You only do this once. After that TaxTim stays in your connector list and is there whenever you need it.
3. Ask it to do your tax
There is no special command. Something as simple as "Help me do my tax return" is enough. The assistant sees that you have TaxTim connected and picks it up from there.
If you have filed with us before, it will find your existing profile. If you have not, it will start you a new return.
4. Work through your return in the chat
One question at a time, in plain English. Your salary, your IRP5, medical aid, retirement annuity contributions, and anything else that applies to you. You will not be shown a form or asked to find a source code on a document.
Ask questions back at any point. If you are not sure what something means or whether it applies to you, say so, and you will get an explanation rather than a field you have to guess at.
5. Review and submit on TaxTim
Everything you answer writes to your real TaxTim return as you go. Nothing is stored only in the chat, so you can stop halfway, come back tomorrow, or switch to taxtim.com and carry on exactly where you left off.
When it is complete, you open your return on TaxTim, check it line by line, and submit it yourself. Nothing reaches SARS until you have confirmed it.

Filing your return
You will be asked about your salary, your IRP5, medical aid, retirement annuity contributions, and anything else that applies to you, one question at a time.
Two things happen on TaxTim rather than in the chat: linking your SARS eFiling profile, and paying. If you linked your profile when you set up your account, that is already done. Your SARS credentials and your card details stay on TaxTim, where they belong.
Everything you answer writes to your real TaxTim return, so you can close the chat, pick it up tomorrow, or switch to taxtim.com and carry on where you left off.
When the return is complete, you review and submit it on TaxTim. Nothing goes to SARS until you have checked it and confirmed.
Why the connector is necessary
Claude and ChatGPT are not connected to SARS. On their own they can explain how tax works, but they cannot see your tax profile, complete a return, or file anything.
TaxTim is the part that makes it real. We are integrated directly with SARS eFiling. The connector just gives you a different door into the same service.
The connector helps you complete your tax return. It does not make the decisions for you. When something needs judgment or you are confused, you can still access the TaxTim Helpdesk and speak to our team of human tax experts.
File your tax return with confidence.
