SARS aims to pay 9 of 10 refunds within 72 hours

Waiting on your SARS refund and not sure what your status means? SARS aims to pay 9 out of 10 refunds (over R100) within 72 hours once your assessment is finalised and your banking details are verified. But verification (up to 21 business days), an audit (up to 90 business days), outstanding returns or a debt set-off can all hold it up. Pick your status below to see what it means, a realistic timeline, what unblocks it, and exactly where to check (eFiling, the SOQS dashboard, WhatsApp 0800 11 7277 or USSD *134*7277#).

Figures last verified against SARS on 28 June 2026. Timelines are SARS service-charter targets, not legal guarantees, and actual times vary.
The rules that govern your refund

The 72-hour promise and the checks that can hold it up

The SARS service-charter rules that decide whether your refund is paid, and how fast. All are targets, not guarantees.

~72 hours

72-hour payout target

SARS aims to pay nine out of every ten refunds due within 72 hours (Service Charter), but only if the refund is more than R100, your banking details are verified, you have no outstanding returns and no debt, and no verification or audit is required.

From assessment completion

When the 72-hour clock starts

The 72-hour window starts from the time SARS has completed and assessed your return, not from the date you submitted.

More than R100

Refund threshold

Only refunds of more than R100 are automatically paid out. Amounts of R100 or less are generally not auto-paid and may be carried forward.

24 hours target

Banking-detail verification

SARS tries to verify bank details within 24 hours. If it cannot auto-verify, a case is opened and supporting documents are requested, which can take up to 21 days (per service charter).

Up to 21 business days

Verification

A lighter check of the information you declared. Up to 21 business days from the date SARS receives ALL your supporting documents, after which the refund follows the ~72-hour rule.

Up to 90 business days

Audit

A deeper examination of your records. SARS aims to finalise within 90 business days from receiving ALL requested documents (longer for complex cases). Progress updates come roughly every 90 calendar days since the Notification of Audit was issued.

Decode your status

What does your refund status mean?

Pick the status your eFiling, SMS or the SOQS dashboard shows. Every state and its full guidance is shown below; selecting one just highlights it for you.

Assessed: refund due, pay-out in progress

~72 hours

What it means

Your return or auto-assessment is finalised, a refund of more than R100 is due, your banking details are verified, and you have no outstanding returns, no debt and no audit or verification. SARS is paying it out.

Realistic timeline

Within roughly 72 hours of the assessment being completed. SARS targets paying 9 of every 10 such refunds within 72 hours.

What unblocks it

Nothing required, just wait. Confirm your banking details are correct on eFiling so the payment is not reversed.

Where to check

eFiling Income Tax Statement of Account (ITSA) shows the refund amount and payment date; the SOQS 'My Tax Return Status' dashboard; WhatsApp 0800 11 7277; USSD *134*7277# (Option 3).

Banking details under verification

24h target, up to 21 days

What it means

SARS has not yet confirmed your bank account. A refund cannot be paid until your banking details are validated. It may also stay pending if the account is not yet in credit.

Realistic timeline

SARS tries to verify within 24 hours. If it cannot auto-verify, a case is opened and documents are requested, which can take up to 21 days (per service charter).

What unblocks it

Make sure the account is active and in your own name, then respond promptly to any document request (ID, proof of bank account, proof of address) via eFiling or a SARS branch / virtual appointment.

Where to check

eFiling 'Maintain SARS Registered Details'; the SOQS dashboard; a SARS branch or virtual appointment; the Contact Centre on 0800 00 7277.

Selected for verification

Up to 21 business days

What it means

SARS is checking the information you declared against its own data and your supporting documents. This is common and is not the same as an audit.

Realistic timeline

Up to 21 business days from the date SARS receives ALL your requested supporting documents. After that, the refund is paid within roughly 72 hours if successful. Partial uploads do not start the clock.

What unblocks it

Upload ALL requested supporting documents on eFiling promptly and completely. The 21-business-day clock only starts once everything is received.

Where to check

eFiling (upload via the verification letter / 'Supporting Documents'); the SOQS dashboard; the Contact Centre on 0800 00 7277.

Selected for audit

Up to 90 business days

What it means

A deeper examination of your financial and accounting records and supporting documents to confirm your declared tax position. The refund is held until the audit concludes and validations pass.

Realistic timeline

SARS aims to finalise within 90 business days from receiving all requested audit documents (longer for complex cases). Progress updates come roughly every 90 calendar days since the Notification of Audit was issued. The refund is paid within roughly 72 hours after the audit concludes.

What unblocks it

Submit complete, accurate documents, respond to every SARS request on time, keep your records organised, and consider professional assistance.

Where to check

eFiling (audit correspondence and document upload); the Contact Centre on 0800 00 7277; a SARS branch or virtual appointment for queries.

Refund held: outstanding returns

Indefinite until filed

What it means

You have one or more prior-year returns that have not been submitted. SARS will not pay a refund until all outstanding returns are filed.

Realistic timeline

Indefinite until you file. Once all returns are submitted and assessed, the normal 72-hour rules resume (subject to any verification or audit).

What unblocks it

File every outstanding return on eFiling. The held refund can then be assessed and released.

Where to check

eFiling (Returns Issued / Returns History); the Contact Centre on 0800 00 7277.

Refund reduced or held: debt set-off

Applied at assessment

What it means

You owe SARS (or another set-off obligation applies). SARS may apply a debt equalisation / set-off and deduct from your refund; the balance, if any, is then paid.

Realistic timeline

The set-off is applied at or after assessment; any remaining balance follows the normal 72-hour rule once validations pass.

What unblocks it

Settle or arrange the underlying debt, or dispute it if it is incorrect. Check your Statement of Account for the debt and the set-off.

Where to check

eFiling Statement of Account (ITSA); the Contact Centre on 0800 00 7277; a SARS branch or virtual appointment to arrange payment or query.

No refund due / amount owed

N/A for a refund

What it means

Your assessment shows R0, or that you owe SARS rather than being due a refund. (Refunds of R100 or less are generally not auto-paid.)

Realistic timeline

Not applicable for a refund. If you owe, a payment due date is shown on your assessment and Statement of Account.

What unblocks it

Review your ITA34 assessment. If you disagree, you can request a correction or lodge a dispute (objection) within the prescribed period.

Where to check

eFiling (Notice of Assessment ITA34 and 'Request for Correction' / 'Dispute'); the Contact Centre on 0800 00 7277.

Submitted: not yet assessed

Clock not started

What it means

Your return is in, but SARS has not finalised the assessment, so there is no refund decision or clock yet. The 72-hour window has not started.

Realistic timeline

Often quick during filing season, but it varies. The 72-hour clock only begins once the assessment is completed.

What unblocks it

Wait for the ITA34 assessment and make sure no documents are outstanding. Watch for an SMS or email and check the SOQS dashboard.

Where to check

The SOQS 'My Tax Return Status' dashboard; eFiling; WhatsApp 0800 11 7277; USSD *134*7277# (Option 3).

Refund FAQs

Frequently asked questions about SARS refunds

Quick answers about SARS refund timelines, delays and how to check your status.

How long does a SARS refund take?

SARS aims to pay nine out of ten refunds due within 72 hours, but only if the refund is more than R100, your banking details are verified, you have no outstanding returns or debt, and you are not selected for verification or audit. The 72-hour clock starts when SARS completes your assessment, not when you submit.

Why is my SARS refund delayed?

Common reasons are: banking details not yet verified (SARS tries within 24 hours, but up to 21 days if documents are needed), selection for verification (up to 21 business days after all documents are received), an audit (up to 90 business days), outstanding prior-year returns, or a debt set-off where SARS deducts what you owe from your refund.

How do I check my SARS refund status?

Check the Income Tax Statement of Account on eFiling, the SOQS 'My Tax Return Status' dashboard (tools.sars.gov.za/sarsonlinequery/visualdashboard), the SARS MobiApp, WhatsApp on 0800 11 7277 (say 'Hi', choose 'Refund Status'), USSD *134*7277# (Option 3), or call the SARS Contact Centre on 0800 00 7277.

What is the difference between SARS verification and an audit?

Verification is a lighter check of the information you declared and is concluded within about 21 business days of SARS receiving all your supporting documents. An audit is a deeper examination of your financial and accounting records and aims to be finalised within 90 business days of SARS receiving all requested documents.

Why was my SARS refund reduced or not paid?

If you owe SARS, a debt set-off can deduct the amount owed from your refund and pay only the balance. Refunds are also withheld until all outstanding returns are filed, and small refunds of R100 or less are generally not paid out automatically.

When does the SARS 72-hour refund window start?

It starts from the time SARS has completed and assessed your return, provided the refund is over R100, your banking details are correct, you have no outstanding debt or returns, and no verification or audit is required.
