I am a full time employed software engineer. I am looking at buying an Apple MacBook Pro Retina priced at R28000, from FNB for R1200 per month over 24 months. This purchase is in part for my work and in part for personal work. How do I determine if I qualify for the "Wear and Tear" tax deduction and for how much I will I qualify? Do I submit this with my annual personal tax?

From www. Taxim. Com [https://www. Taxtim. Com/za/help/definition/wear-and-tear] I calculated:
"Deductible amount for 2016: R3888. 88 (3 year write-off) " ( if I buy the device in May 2015). So does this mean I will get a personal tax deduction of R3888. 88 for three years?

You would qualify for wear and tear on the value of the laptop as well as the interest payments to FNB. However how would you be able to prove to SARS that you use the laptop for business use?

Thank you for your response. I am a developer, developing software both for windows based and apple based applications. I do development from home sometimes, also my work have a business continuity plan that require us to work from home in case of an emergency. Would this suffice as enough proof?

Whom do I contact at SARS to get a formal answer before buying the laptop?

Again thanks for your input, appreciated.

SARS will not give you a formal answer, but you should get a letter from your employer stating you use your own laptop for work purposes and SARS should accept that along with the invoice.
