I just received my IRP5 today from my former employer and I have an amount under code 3698 which I believe is reserved for Gross Non-Retirement Funding Income. Last Tax Year I was working outside the borders of South Africa and was in the local payroll only because I was in the local Medical Aid (I left my dependents in South Africa while working abroad), I did not receive any other income in South Africa.
Check the above link and see if it applies, if so you will have to submit supporting documents to SARS such as a contract from your employer stating the income earned and the periods out of the country so that the income can be exempt.

Thanks Tim but my original question was: Why do I have an amount on my IRP5 under code 3698?

For the income you earned whilst working. All income earned is classified as either gross retirement or gross non-retirement funding employment income on your IRP5. These are just totals that SARS uses to calculate certain amounts. What source codes appear next to the income section -3601?
