I did not make a claim for medical expenses on my 2013 income tax return which I filed a year ago. I have now discovered that I could have claimed a deduction for medical expenses in excess of 7.5% of my taxable income. Can I change a tax return that has already been submitted to SARS, and if so, how do I do this on eFiling and how is this likely to be viewed by SARS?

I want some clarification as I am confused after having spoken to SARS today. I queried the amount they say I owe for my 2013 Tax return. Which I submitted in 2013 and then requested a correction now in July as I had not put in medical aid expenses I paid on my own and the number of members for my medical aid was stated as 1 instead of 2. When I submitted the frst one in 2013 I owed them about R3100- nw after the correction and it been audited they owed me R2700....what surprises me is that th...

I am the sole director of a company. I travel extensively for business using my personal vehicle. My question is do I deduct vehicle expenses such as petrol, insurance, services etc.. through the company, or do I rather take these deductions into account in submitting my personal tax return?

What happens if SARS finds out about a casual gift(a watch) I have given to a friend. Will SARS investigate me for tax evasion if I have donated a watch valued at R23 000 to a friend and I have not declared any details relating to that donation on any tax returns. I'm aware that I would qualify for the R100 000 general exemption for donation.

Risk of underestimation of provisional tax in August?

Written by Marc
Posted 24 August 2014
If you underestimate your provisional tax in the August submission, but then are better able to more accurately estimate it in February, are you penalised for the under estimation in August? Furthermore, are there possibly any thresholds for underestimation in August which gives rise to a penalty, even if you accurately submit in February. Or is it is you're able to estimate accurately in February, that there are no penalties induced despite the underestimation in August?
What percentage of electricity can I claim when working from home?

Written by Marc
Posted 24 August 2014
As a freelancer working from home I realize I can claim certain expenses such as electricity. I have seen several sources indicate that I can claim a percentage based on the size of my home office in relation to my entire home, is that the rule?
My work space is maybe 10% of my home but I can confidently say that at least 30% of my electricity expenses is due to the various electronic equipment running 24/7 in that area. How much can I claim, 10% or 30%?

Do I put out-of-pocket medical expenses under 4020 AND/OR 4040 ? I do not belong to a medical aid

Written by Marc

I do not belong to a medical aid and was wondering do I put my out-of-pocket medical expenses under source code 4020 or 4040 ? Because the 4040 code is compulsory if you say yes to " did you incur any medical expenses" and in the other questions you say that it must be put in 4020 ? So must 0 be written under 4040 ?
