If I earned only 55.000 Rand for the whole year through freelance activities, will I have to pay tax

  Written by Marc

I understand that the tax threshold in 2014 is 70700 Rand. In the financial year 2013/2014 I have earned only 55.000 Rand through freelance activities with different companies (I am a student). So my question is, will I have to try to bring the taxable income even more down (e.g. through claiming business expenses, medical expenses etc.) or do I need not bother as I am anyway below the threshold?

Is Road accident fund settlement taxed?

  Written by Marc

My wife received an Road accident fund settlement last year (2013) after she was injured as a passenger in a car accident some years ago. Our understanding is that this settlement amount is tax free and does not have to be declared (according to the attorneys). The question is, does this amount have to be indicated anywhere on either my wife's, or my income tax returns (i.e. under non taxable income section) since the money was deposited into her bank account. We are married in C.O.P

Am I being double taxed?

  Written by Marc

My company maternity policy states they will only pay me 50% of my basic salary while on leave, lets say R10. They paid me in full but if I leave I have to pay the 50% back that I was not entitled to. When they paid me in full I received my salary after tax, let's say R8. Now that I resigned they want the balance of the 50% paid back to them before tax earning. Is this double taxation as I earned after tax but must pay back pre- tax? I think I should pay them R4 back but they want R5 I.e...

Do you need to include an assessed capital loss in your tax return?

  Written by Marc

I incurred an assessed capital loss for the 2013 tax year through sale of shares. For 2014, I made a capital gain also via shares. I read that we don't need to include the R30000 annual exclusion in our ITR12 as SARS will include this automatically. Does the same apply for the assessed capital loss? I can't find any place for it in SARS eFiling.
