What kind of supporting documents do I need as proof for medical expenses out of my own pocket? I had hospital expenses where I received a statement indicating the amount paid by the medical aid and the amount I had to pay in. On the statement it shows the payments made by me (I made monthly payments).
Is this sufficient proof of my payments? What proof do I need for my monthly prescription medicine (my medical aid does not cover my medicine). I paid out of my own pocket each time.
On my certificate for tax purposes received from the medical aid it shows my contributions and the amount not covered by the medical aid. Will I need proof of payment for that total amount in order to claim?
How do I submit the supporting documents? Will I have to go to a SARS office or can one sent the proof electronically?
You can submit these electronically when you file your tax return. Have you filed already? You would need proof of payment and the actual invoice/prescription. SARS should accept the hospital statement as proof, and usually accept the medical certificate as the other expenses. Otherwise you need to submit the receipt and prescription.
