No, it is not the same although it is also an amount deducted from your salary and paid to SARS.
It stands for Unemployment Insurance Fund - if you work more than 24 hours a month for an employer you will pay 1% of your salary and your employer will pay 1%. (capped for both at R148,72 per month)

If you become unemployed or are unable to work because of maternity, adoption leave, or illness you are able to claim UIF back from the Department of Labour.

PAYE is employees tax deducted from your salary. Please make use of our SARS income tax calculator to see UIF and PAYE payable on your salary

oh okay great so my salary is R5000 and every month UIF deducts R50.00 and I have been working here at X for three months.
so does this mean if ever I had to quit, fall ill or go on maternity leave I would receive R150 back??

In theory yes, but best to check the Department of Labour's website to get detailed clarification on the process, requirements to claim, benefits etc
