I was unemployed for roughly six months of the 2015/2016 tax year, do I need to submit any proof. Now with the new work I have to pay provisional tax because I work for myself but not as a company, how does this affect tax deductions?

You do not need to submit proof unless SARS request it. In which case, an affidavit would suffice. Please read our blog on how to Swear an affidavit.

You can deduct all business related expenses that you incur in production of your income. eg. travel, stationery, telephone, etc Remember that any expenses incurred that relate to business and personal, needs to be pro-rated where you work out the % of business usage out of the total usage and then claim the expense accordingly.
