I am a freelance artist, I want to work fulltime for myself, but can't be certain how much I will make or whether I would make any money at all. I am married in community of property. My husband is lucky enough to have an employer that takes care of his submission every year. I need to ask whether I should add my income to his submission or whether I should have my own tax number. I tried to enlighten myself by reading the Tax website,, but it's all greek to me, I can't seem to figure it out. I just need to know if I make say R 80 000 give or take a year - what do I do with it,, how much of it must I sacrifice to SARS. How do I pay them.. I just want to be on the right side and know it's all good.
The tax threshold is currently R75,000 for 2016/2016 - therefore if you earn a taxable income (income less expenses) below this amount you won't need to pay any tax, however we suggest you still submit a tax return to be 100% compliant and have an unbroken filing history should you be above the threshold later on.
Assuming you earn above the tax threshold, you should register as a Provisional Taxpayer and pay tax twice a year on your income. Remember you can deduct business related expenses to reduce your income, and ultimate tax liability (eg. paint, materials, home office, telephone etc)
