I think SARS owes me a refund because my ITA34 reflected a negative number and said "refund due to you". Anyway they are now giving me grief, disputing my refund and demanding I respond in 21 days by sending me a "Final Request to Revise Income Tax Return or Submit Relevant Material". However in this document they say: "In the event that you couldn't find an error, you also had the option of submitting to SARS copies of the following material in support of the declarations made in your income tax return:" This is followed by an empty document list.

What do they want me to send them Tim, please can you help!!

Don't be too alarmed, these checks by SARS are part of their random or specific verification procedures to check that the income and expenses declared are correct as per the documents you used to complete your return.

What you would typically need to submit to SARS is:

- IRP5's
- Logbook for travels related to work in the case of travel allowance or sole proprietor/commission earner
- Medical Aid Certificate and proof of other medical expenditure which was not covered by medical aid
- Retirement Annuity/Pension Fund contribution certificates
- Income Protection contribution certificates
- Bank certificates showing interest earned or capital gains made from selling shares (IT3b/IT3c)
- Proof of Donations made to qualifying Public Benefit Organisations/Not-for profit. They will issue you with this document

For non-salaried individuals the following would also be needed:
- All other proof of income such as invoices or proof of expenses such as phone accounts and rental payments etc...

I hope this provides clarity.

Hmmm, I don't have most of those documents, but I just uploaded all the documents that justify the values I entered into my return - so for my Local business I uploaded my invoices paid and my fixed costs, and for my medical aid I just sent the pdf from Discovery.

Is this ok?

There were no other values to justify on the tax return so that's all I could send!

I hope I get my tax refund soon...

As long as you provide SARS with all the documents needed to justify the amounts entered then you should not have a problem. If all clear, you should have your refund within 10 days or so. SARS will send you a "Completion Letter" informing you of the status or asking for more documents.
