I have outstanding tax returns for 2012/2014/2015 and the subsequent penalties outstanding PLUS an arrears amount of just short of R20 000. I am registered for e-filing but find expenses I can claim for and their relevant codes very confusing so have saved the tax returns without any expenses claimed. I am a commission only earner in property sales and have IRP5's for the relevant periods. I have not kept a log book for petrol and kms but have slips for petrol, car expenses, data costs, client gifts, client meals, laptop purchase, medical expense receipts (no medical aid) etc. Etc. I am now threatened with prosecution so need to act quickly and am hoping I can get refunds that cover what is outstanding. Would you be able to assist with expenses (in a shoebox) and the tax returns and what I can successfully claim for or do you think I should just sort them, add them up and take a flyer with codes and continue with the tax returns myself?
You would need to organise the expenses in some way so this can be done on excel. Then you would make use of the Deductions Section and include the travel related expenses under travel and the rest under Other. For depreciation, please make use of our How to calculate Wear and Tear blog to see what can be deducted for the laptop. The medical expenses you would need to put under the medical section.
