News Alert: Tax Season 2020

On Tuesday evening, the SARS commissioner, Edward Kieswetter, held a media briefing to talk about the challenges that SARS is facing due to Covid-19.

He also announced the new filing dates for the 2020 tax season, which covers the period from 1 March 2019 to 28 February 2020.

We are engaging with stakeholders at various regulatory bodies to clarify the new filing deadlines, as some aspects are unclear.

We can confirm however, that the start of tax season will definitely be delayed.

This means you won’t be able to submit your tax return to SARS on 1 July 2020 as we all had expected.

At this stage, it looks like the season will open on 1 September 2020 with some opportunity for early filing but these details need to be confirmed.

The closing date for non-provisional taxpayers will be 16 November 2020 and 31 January 2021 for provisional taxpayers. We will update you as soon as we receive any further clarity from SARS.

Despite these new timelines, we suggest you make sure you are ready to submit the moment tax-filing season opens. Rather be first in the queue – it would be a shame to face any further delays, especially if you are due a tax refund!

Below are the most important things you need to do right now:

  • Register for a SARS eFiling profile if you have not done so before. You can click here for step-by-step instructions on how to register. If you don’t yet have a tax number, you can do this at the same time that you register your profile. Please refer here for more details.
  • If you do have a SARS profile, check that your login details work. If they don’t, follow the onscreen instructions to reset them and then keep these details somewhere safe!
  • Check your bank details on eFiling to make sure they are correct. You can refer to detailed instructions in our guide here.
