I currently pay for my parents medical aid. They are both pensioners and they do not submit tax returns to SARS. They are on their own medical aid membership, and I am on my own. So, my dad is the main member on his, with my mum as a dependant, and I am a main member on mine with my wife as a dependant. This is because my parents are on a different medical aid scheme then what I am on. SARS says that only the main member can claim for medical aid contributions, so that means that my dad must claim for the contributions, and then I must provide him with proof of payment. How can I claim for these contributions on my tax return?

if you pay the medical expenses of a dependent, then you can claim the benefit via your own Tax Return. In the opening questions of your Tax Return, you need to answer "yes" to the question asking if you contribute to a medical aid.
In the Medical Aid section of you Tax Return, you then need to then complete all the details per the Tax Certificate received from their Medical Aid. You can add up the amounts from your own certificate and that of your parents. You will be the main member with three dependents (i.e. your wife and parents).

If SARS does request proof, you need to supply them with the certificates from both Medical Aids and be prepared to justify why you pay the medical aid for your parents.
