Is the ref number on my irp5 a valid tax number or should I register

I am starting a new job next month and at my previous work I received a IRP5 form but my annual salary was below R60000, so it wasn't necessary to register for tax. Now at the new job I am going to get above R60000 annually. So now the new employer needs my tax number. Is it the reference number? or should I still register for tax?

There may be a number on your IRP5 beginning with a 0,1,2, or 3 - that would be your ten digit reference number.
