Do I need to declare a lump sum death benefit payout to SARS?

My husband recently passed away and I received a lump sum death benefit payout, which already had tax deducted from it. Do I still need to declare this income and if so, what type of income is this?

My condolences for the loss of your husband. You do need to declare it, but an IRP5/IT3a will already be loaded onto your ITR12 Income Tax return automatically if you use eFiling (just be sure to check the amounts). If you don't use eFiling then you would probably have been posted the IRP5/IT3a from the fund administrators, so you can include it manually with your ITR12.
