You sent me a reminder to file my IRP6 Provisional Tax Return for 2016 however, I'm not sure whether I am still a Provisional Tax payer?

I did freelance work until Feb 2015, and from March 2016 I've been employed, paying PAYE through my employer. I haven't earned any additional income. Do I still need to complete an IRP6 as a Provisional Tax payer?

If all your income is from a salary, you would not need to pay or file a provisional tax return.
You should deregister as a provisional taxpayer though to ensure SARS does not penalise you for non-submission. You can do this on SARS eFiling by going to the Home Tab and clicking tax types and de-registering there. This will mean you are only a "regular" taxpayer.

Thanks so much for the advice, you rock ;)

To complicate things slightly; I believe I will receive additional income from other sources later this year. Do you suggest I fill out an IRP6 (with zero income for 2016) and remain a provisional tax payer, or become a regular tax payer and change if and when necessary?

Thanks,
Shaun

Only a pleasure!

If it is likely that you will receive income from other sources in the future, then it is fine to submit a nil provisional tax return now and stay registered as a provisional taxpayer for the future. Don't forget though to submit the nil tax return in time as there may be penalties...

I completed the provisional IRP6 with nil tax return, and submitted it. On the 'Income Tax Work Page' there is a section that says 'Supporting Documents' and states "waiting for documentation to be uploaded".

What, if any, supporting documents do I need to submit?

Forgive my ignorance, but do I need to submit anything for the PAYE that my employer has been submitting every month?

Is there potential for me to receive a refund from SARS for the PAYE tax, and if so, would they require anything from me or does my employer take care of this?

You wouldn't be requested to submit supporting documents for your provisional tax return. It sounds like this request relates to your Tax Return (ITR12). Have you recently submitted and on your Tax Assessment (ITA34) next to "audit verification" is there a Yes?

You would only need to submit your IRP5? when you submit your 2016 tax return. At this point SARS will assess you and determine whether or not a refund is due.

Thanks.

The "Supporting Documents" prompt has disappeared, and there is a "no" next to the audit verification on the ITA34 :)

Cool, does my IRP5 and 2016 tax return need to be submitted before Friday?

Your 2nd provisional tax return for 2016 is due Feb 29th.

Your 2016 tax return (ITR12), which will contain your IRP5 data for 1 March 2015 - 28 Feb 2016 is only due end of November 2016 so you have plenty of time :)

Ok wait, I'm again seeing the "Supporting Docs" prompt, and there is a "y" next to the audit verification :/ I'm assuming this has something to do with my nil tax return?

What documentation do they need from me?

Where is the supporting docs link - are you seeing it in the Provisional tax work page or Personal Income Tax?
Where is the Y next to audit verification - on what document?

Shaun says:

Supporting Docs link is on the Income Tax Work Page, and the audit verification is on the ITA34. See attachments.

Thanks again for all the help :)

It is related to your 2015 Tax Return The request for supporting documents has nothing to do with your Provisional Tax Return. You should have received a letter from SARS detailing the documents you need to upload to them on SARS eFiling. You need to do this in order to obtain your refund.

That's strange. I don't believe I've received a letter from them, and they've already transferred my refund.

Could it be an error on their part?

It would be best to call SARS on 0800 007 277 to find out if they still require documents from you.
