I heard somewhere that if I changed jobs this year or worked for less than 12 months then I might get a tax refund back from SARS.

Is this true? If so, can you explain why?

When tax is deducted each month in the form of Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE), it is calculated as if you are working a full year and then adjusted for a monthly amount. So often when you have left your job mid-year, if you had to work out your income for the full year and what tax would be paid, you would find that too much PAYE was deducted and therefore you are actually entitled to a tax refund as your tax paid was more than the tax owed.
