Can I dispute a claim from a few years back?

I believe I qualified for a exemption on my tax a few years ago (around 2011/2012) - out the country for more than 183 days with one trip more than 60 consecutive days all for work purposes. My tax consultant at the time said he submitted all the documents, but when I went to SARS they said they had not recieved them. I handed them in at SARS and they requested further information which I submitted. They then requested further information which I then got so frustrated I decided to give up on the claim. My tax consultant says it is now to late to dispute the claim unless I have a very valid reason. I just want to confirm if I will be wasting my time trying to claim this money back - I dont like sitting at SARS again for the whole day.

Work through our questions, Can I claim a portion of my foreign income as exempt? to make sure you qualify

If the answer is yes, then you should be able to dispute it online via SARS eFiling, and then you can submit the relevant documents online and save yourself the trip to SARS.

I believe I have met the conditions based on my prior research and confirmed with the automated questions - what I really would like to know is that given this happened a few years back, could I still claim - how many years have you got to lodge and dispute a claim? What would the chances be of receiving a refund?

The reasons that you have provided to us indicate that the delay was not your fault, you can always appeal to SARS for leniency with valid reasons and they will rule on whether the time frame has surpassed, but that would be up to SARS. It is always worth the try as they usually are accepting of excuses which were out of the control of the taxpayer.
