Can I claim MPS as a state doctor if I do extra private work earning me additional income?

I work as a salaried doctor in the state. I also however do some work in private so I need MPS. Can I deduct this and the laptop I bought to do this work? Unrelated, I pay R3200 per month for my domestic worker. Any possibility of a tax deduction on this?

You cannot deduct personal expenditure such as to your domestic worker. You can deduct the laptop if you use it for work, if you also use it for personal use then you need to apportion the cost between work and private use. If the laptop was under R7 000 then you can write off the full amount apportioned for business use. If not then please use our Wear and Tear calculator to work out how much you can write off.

These are mandatory for the extra private work I do which is earning me my additional income. Also would I be able to claim a portion of cellphone bills as about 20% of use is for business?

You can deduct the fees against private income earned as long as you are not salaried in earning that income, ie. you are not under employment. You would be able to deduct the business expense of calls against this income yes, again provided you are not salaried.
