Will SARS penalise me for outstanding tax returns?

I'm not sure if I disappeared under the radar for some time now due to generating my own income for years barely surviving and then going bank. At that stage I was a provisional tax payer. Years down the line I did contract work making ends meat. I eventually got a secure job since 2013 - probably not earning enough to register as a tax payer in order to submit tax returns? However I think this might be a different scenario now.

it would be advisable to bring your tax filings up to date ASAP. Register for TaxTim and let us assist you to complete and submit prior year tax returns to SARS.
If you were not earning enough to pay tax, then you shouldn't have any penalties from SARS.

Would it be possible to find out what my current status it and how many tax returns are outstanding?

Regards

Robert

Not to my knowledge? Only the business I was involved with, during this time my remuneration was drawings from the business no salaries paid. I started working for salary again in 2013.

If you don't know your tax reference number, please read our blog on How to get a SARS tax number
You can then register for SARS eFiling and request a Statement of Account to see outstanding tax returns and penalties that may be due.

Alternatively, you can call SARS on 0800 007 277 and request them to send a Statement of Account to you.
