If tax payments to SARS is outstanding, why won't SARS issue a provisional taxpayer with a tax directive

They require all tax monies to be paid before applying any future tax decisions unfortunately. What are you trying to obtain a directive for?

Thank you for your response. I am a commission earner and the company I work for will not pay me my commission without a tax directive from SARS. SARS, on the other hand, will not issue a tax directive to me unless I've paid them all the money they're owed by me.

By getting the directive from SARS, would mean that I can get paid by the company - then I can make a payment to SARS - without the directive from SARS, there are no winners and I am caught in a catch-22 situation.

You can go to SARS and request a payment plan in order to pay off the money owed over a number of months - at the same time you can negotiate with them to release the directive.

Alternatively your employer should still be paying over your commission, but would apply the full tax tables to the amount and deduct PAYE accordingly. They cannot withhold your commission completely.
