SARS sent me an SMS about auto-assessment? Is this legit?

I received an SMS from SARS which mentioned something about an auto-assessment. I have not heard of this before. I don't trust anyone these days, and because of that I just want to ensure that this is legit - do you think this is a scam?

Yes, it is most likely legit. SARS have indicated that they will be sending SMSs from 1 August 2020 to certain taxpayers who have been selected to be auto-assessed.

This is a process whereby SARS uses data collected from employers, financial institutions, medical schemes, retirement annuity fund administrators and other 3rd party data providers to generate the assessment automatically, without any input from the taxpayer.

SARS have selected you to be auto-assessed because they have collected all relevant data about your income and expense, but please be aware, this may not be the case! Please read our FAQ on auto-assessments to find out more.
