How can we prove to SARS that we were not in the country and do not need to pay tax?

My partner and I were living abroad for over 18 months and did not visit South Africa once during that time. My partner went to SARS and did all that he should have done to be legal with all his forms to prove he didn't need to pay tax for those 18 months. But now he has received a message from SARS stating he owes a large sum of money. Why is this? And how do we go about it?

You would need to go to a police station in the country you are in and get an affidavit signed saying that you have been outside the country along with proof of employment in your current country and passport copies as well.
